Example: Nick likes crocodiles. So does John.
Write sentences about John to show that he always wants to be like Nick (Ex. 12).
Example: Nick likes crocodiles. So does John.
Answers:
- Nick has never seen a bee. — Neither has John.
- Yesterday Nick ate ten ice creams. — So did John.
- Nick can’t swim at all. — Neither can John.
- Nick is going to be a butcher. — So is John.
- Nick was flying in my dream. — So was John.
Let’s break down each sentence to better understand the reasoning behind it and how it illustrates John wanting to be like Nick:
1. Nick has never seen a bee. — Neither has John.
- In this sentence, you are comparing the experiences of both Nick and John. The phrase «Neither has John» means that John shares the same experience as Nick, implying that John hasn’t seen a bee either. This shows that John is similar to Nick in this specific experience, highlighting that he wants to be like Nick in terms of experiences.
2. Yesterday Nick ate ten ice creams. — So did John.
- Here, you use the phrase «So did John» to show that John did the same thing as Nick. The use of «So» in the sentence indicates that John not only had a similar experience (eating ice cream) but specifically did it in the same way as Nick, further emphasizing that John wants to be like Nick in his actions.
3. Nick can’t swim at all. — Neither can John.
This sentence uses «Neither can John» to show that John shares the same inability as Nick. The word «Neither» in this context connects their shared characteristic, emphasizing that both are in the same situation and showing how John mirrors Nick’s limitations (in this case, the inability to swim).
4. Nick is going to be a butcher. — So is John.
- This sentence uses «So is John» to indicate that John has the same future plan as Nick. The word «So» here functions as a way to show agreement between Nick and John, highlighting that they are making similar life choices, reinforcing the idea that John wants to be like Nick.
5. Nick was flying in my dream. — So was John.
- In this case, «So was John» suggests that John, too, was involved in the same dream experience as Nick. By using «So» again, it shows that John has the same experiences or qualities as Nick, even in the realm of dreams. This serves to further underline that John wishes to emulate Nick, even in imaginary or subconscious situations.
Conclusion:
Each sentence uses structures like «Neither has John,» «So did John,» and «So is John» to emphasize that John mirrors Nick’s actions, experiences, or characteristics. The use of «So» and «Neither» helps establish a connection between Nick and John, showing that John always wants to be like Nick in various aspects of life.

Why don’t we stop him?
The Women’s Club had a meeting every Friday. And every Friday, they invited someone to come and talk to them about important things. After that, they had tea and asked questions.
One Friday, a gentleman came and talked to the club about different problems of ecology. He spoke about air and water pollution, acid rains, and the greenhouse effect and then he mentioned the growth of population and shortage of food. «There is not enough food in the world for everybody», he said. «More than half the people in the world are hungry», he said.
After that, he spoke about cars and buses, their positive and negative effects. He said that cars bring help quickly and this is very important for the police and fire brigades and ambulances. Cars and buses do important work — they transport goods, take people to and from work. But they are dangerous, noisy, expensive, and unhealthy. And there are often traffic jams. They do a lot of harm to the city atmosphere and ruin the beauty of the countryside because many new roads are built everywhere. Though the cars are very convenient and comfortable and they are much faster than trains and boats, people suffer a lot from them because nowadays people don’t have much exercise. Everybody knows that it is much healthier to walk or to ride a bicycle. But fewer people every year do that. Most of us prefer to go by car. “And there are more and more cars produced each year!” the gentleman said. “Just imagine a car producer is making a car every minute, day and night somewhere in the world. How can we solve the problem?” He waited for a few seconds before he continued, but before he began to speak again, one of the club members, a young woman, had a ready answer. “Well, why don’t we find that man and stop him?”
Why don’t we stop him?
The young member of the Women’s Club wanted to stop the car producer, because she listened to the lecture of the gentleman who told about the negative consequences of cars and she thought that the car producer was only one person.
Why the young member of the Women’s Club wanted to stop the car producer:
The young member of the Women’s Club wanted to stop the car producer after listening to the gentleman’s lecture on various ecological issues. Here’s a more detailed explanation of the process leading to her decision:
1. The Lecture on Ecology:
- The gentleman spoke to the Women’s Club about several pressing environmental issues, including air pollution, water pollution, acid rain, and the greenhouse effect.
- After discussing these global problems, he also talked about the growth of the population and the shortage of food. He emphasized that there is not enough food in the world for everyone, and that more than half of the world’s population is hungry. This gave a clear and urgent view of the ecological crisis humanity is facing.
2. Discussion on Cars and Buses:
- The speaker then moved on to discuss the effects of cars and buses. While he acknowledged the positive side of cars and buses, such as transporting goods, helping emergency services (like police, fire brigades, and ambulances), and providing comfort for people, he also pointed out their negative effects:
- Cars are noisy, expensive, and unhealthy for both individuals and the environment.
- Traffic jams and the pollution caused by cars harm the city atmosphere and destroy the beauty of nature (like the countryside).
- Air pollution from cars also contributes to a lack of physical exercise, as people prefer driving instead of walking or cycling, which is much healthier.
3. The Increasing Number of Cars:
- The gentleman highlighted a concerning trend: more cars are being produced every year, with car manufacturers making cars every minute, day, and night. He asked, «How can we solve the problem?» implying that the growing number of cars is a major environmental issue.
4. The Young Woman’s Response:
- After the lecture, one of the club members, a young woman, heard the gentleman’s words and immediately thought that the car producer was an individual person who was causing the environmental harm. She made the conclusion that if they could find this person, they could stop the production of cars and, in turn, reduce the environmental damage.
- Her thought process was influenced by the fact that the speaker mentioned the huge impact that individual producers (like the car manufacturer) have on the environment. Since she was hearing about the direct harm caused by cars, she believed that stopping the producer might stop the negative consequences.
5. Her Motivation:
- The woman wanted to stop the car producer because she was deeply concerned about the environment and the ecological problems caused by cars. She believed that if this one individual (the car producer) could be stopped, it might make a significant impact on reducing pollution and improving the quality of life for everyone.
- Her belief that «the car producer was only one person» reflects the idea that a single action can have a big effect, but she was unaware of the larger scale of the problem. She felt that taking action against the car producer might lead to solutions to the environmental crisis.
In Conclusion:
The young woman’s desire to stop the car producer stems from her concern about the negative consequences of cars, as explained in the gentleman’s lecture. She connected the ecological problems discussed (like air pollution and traffic jams) with a belief that a single person, the car producer, could be responsible for these issues. She felt that stopping this one producer might help solve the broader environmental problems, even though the reality is much more complex and requires larger systemic changes.
This example shows how a young member of the Women’s Club, after learning about the issues, took a practical and immediate solution, reflecting how people often believe that individual actions can solve large-scale problems.

Usual Friday meeting at the Women’s Club
The Women’s Club had a meeting every Friday. And every Friday, they invited someone to come and talk to them about important things. After that, they had tea and asked questions.
Main ecological problems in the gentleman’s talk
One Friday, a gentleman came and talked to the club about different problems of ecology. He spoke about air and water pollution, acid rains, and the greenhouse effect and then he mentioned the growth of population and shortage of food. There is not enough food in the world for everybody and more than half the people in the world are hungry. After that, he spoke about cars and buses, their positive and negative effects.
Positive aspects of cars
Cars bring help quickly and this is very important for the police and fire brigades and ambulances. Cars and buses do important work — they transport goods, take people to and from work.
Negative aspects of cars
The cars are also dangerous, noisy, expensive, and unhealthy. And there are often traffic jams.

Usual Friday meeting at the Women’s Club
Each Friday, the Women’s Club held a regular meeting where a guest speaker would come and share insights on significant topics. These weekly gatherings were an opportunity for the club members to engage in thoughtful discussions. After the speaker presented their topic, there would be time for tea and a Q&A session, where the club members could ask questions and delve deeper into the subject. This structure provided a chance for the members to learn and exchange ideas, making it an essential and consistent part of their week.
Main ecological problems in the gentleman’s talk
One particular Friday, a gentleman was invited to address the group. His lecture focused on the pressing ecological issues that humanity is currently facing. He began by discussing various forms of pollution, including air and water pollution, which are among the most serious environmental problems today. He highlighted the devastating effects of acid rains, which are caused by air pollution, and the greenhouse effect, which is contributing to climate change. These environmental problems are deeply interconnected, and the gentleman emphasized their global nature. He didn’t stop there but also expanded the conversation to touch on the rapid growth of the world’s population and the shortage of food. He brought attention to the stark reality that there isn’t enough food for everyone on the planet and pointed out that more than half of the people in the world are suffering from hunger. By illustrating these issues, he painted a dire picture of the current state of the environment, urging immediate attention and action from the audience.
Positive aspects of cars
After discussing the ecological crises, the gentleman shifted his focus to cars and buses, acknowledging their important role in modern society. He discussed the positive aspects of these vehicles, emphasizing how vital they are for transporting goods, which is essential for businesses and everyday life. He also noted how cars and buses are crucial for emergency services, such as police, fire brigades, and ambulances, which rely on quick transportation to respond to urgent situations. The speaker pointed out that cars and buses, despite the criticism they receive, contribute significantly to the functioning of cities and communities, enabling people to get to work or transport goods effectively and efficiently. This made it clear that, despite their drawbacks, cars serve a key purpose in modern infrastructure.
Negative aspects of cars
However, the speaker did not ignore the significant negative impact that cars have on the environment. He shifted to discuss the harmful consequences of widespread car use, starting with the dangers they pose to public health and the environment. He noted that cars contribute to air pollution, noise pollution, and the worsening of the city atmosphere. He specifically addressed how the increasing number of cars on the road causes frequent traffic jams, which not only delay people but also release more harmful emissions into the air. The gentleman also pointed out the environmental destruction caused by the construction of new roads, which destroy the beauty of natural landscapes and encourage further urban sprawl. Moreover, he emphasized how cars contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, with fewer people choosing to walk or cycle due to the convenience of driving. This decrease in physical activity is linked to a range of health issues, such as obesity and heart problems. Despite the benefits that cars offer in terms of speed and convenience, the speaker argued that their environmental and health costs were becoming increasingly unsustainable. As more cars are produced each year, the issue is likely to worsen, and the environmental consequences are becoming more evident.
The young woman’s suggestion
As the gentleman finished his lecture, he posed a question to the audience: «How can we solve the problem?» He painted a picture of a car producer making a car every minute, 24/7, somewhere in the world, contributing to the ever-growing number of cars. He waited for a response but before anyone could speak, a young woman from the club, having absorbed the lecture, eagerly offered a solution. She suggested, «Well, why don’t we find that man and stop him?» This response reflected her frustration with the scale of the problem and her belief that if they could just stop one person—perhaps a symbol of all car manufacturers—they could make a significant difference. Her reaction was an immediate desire to take action, fueled by her awareness of the negative impact cars have on the environment.
Conclusion:
In the end, this exchange at the Women’s Club encapsulated the complex nature of environmental issues and the challenges of finding solutions. While the gentleman outlined both the positive and negative aspects of cars, he also painted a picture of the broader environmental crises humanity faces. The young woman’s suggestion to stop the car manufacturer reflects a sense of urgency and the desire for direct action. However, it also highlights a common response to global problems: the need for individual responsibility and collective action. Her comment, though perhaps idealistic, demonstrates the growing awareness and concern for the environment and the desire to find practical ways to address these critical issues.
This story showcases not only the global issues of pollution and environmental destruction but also the importance of discussions and the power of individual contributions to the larger conversation about ecological sustainability. The speaker’s lecture provided essential knowledge, while the young woman’s comment revealed the potential for individuals to take responsibility and push for change, however small their contribution might seem.
Pretend you are at the Women’s Club meeting. Play the role of the gentleman and answer the following.
1. Which in your opinion is the most serious ecological problem?
2. What continents and countries suffer mainly from shortages of food? Can this be helped?
3. Why are cars dangerous for the people in towns and cities?
4. Why do you think there are more and more cars with every coming year?
1. In my opinion, the most serious ecological problem is pollution of our air and water. It harms our health and the homes of animals.
2. Many countries in Africa and parts of Asia suffer from food shortages. Yes, I believe this can be helped with support from other countries, by sharing food and teaching better ways to grow it.
3. Cars are dangerous because they release harmful fumes that we breathe, and there’s always a risk of accidents, especially in busy cities with many pedestrians and cyclists.
4. I think there are more cars each year because people want the convenience of traveling wherever and whenever they want. Also, for many people, owning a car is a sign of success.
- What, in your opinion, is the most serious ecological problem? The most serious ecological problem is, without a doubt, the pollution of air and water. Our air, which we breathe every day, is being contaminated by harmful gases from factories, cars, and other industries. Water sources, too, are being polluted with waste, chemicals, and plastics, making it unsafe for both humans and wildlife. This pollution directly affects our health, causing respiratory problems, allergies, and other diseases, while also disrupting the natural habitats of countless species of animals and plants. It is crucial to tackle this issue to ensure a healthier future for all living beings.
- Which continents and countries mostly suffer from food shortages? Can this be helped? Many countries in Africa, such as Ethiopia, Sudan, and Somalia, as well as some parts of Asia like India and Afghanistan, are particularly affected by food shortages. These regions suffer from drought, political instability, and poor agricultural practices, which lead to famine and malnutrition. However, this issue can be mitigated with international aid, better agricultural practices, and technology to improve food production. Additionally, countries can invest in more sustainable farming methods, create better food distribution systems, and encourage local food production to ensure food security. It’s a collective global effort that can make a significant difference.
- Why are cars dangerous for people in both small and large cities? Cars are dangerous for a variety of reasons. In both small and large cities, cars emit harmful gases, including carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, which contribute to air pollution and affect our health. In busy urban areas, cars are a major cause of traffic accidents, posing a risk not only to drivers but also to pedestrians and cyclists. In large cities, where traffic congestion is common, the risk of accidents increases, and the noise and air pollution affect people’s well-being. In smaller towns, cars also contribute to the destruction of nature, as roads are expanded to accommodate more vehicles, leading to a loss of natural beauty and wildlife habitats. The widespread use of cars is a global issue that needs to be addressed for the safety and health of everyone.
- Why do you think the number of cars increases every year? The growing number of cars each year is largely due to the desire for convenience. People want to be able to travel quickly and comfortably, without relying on public transportation. Owning a car also represents a sense of personal freedom, as it allows individuals to go anywhere, at any time, without being dependent on others. In many countries, owning a car has become a status symbol, a sign of success and social standing. Furthermore, with the expansion of cities and the increase in population, more people feel the need to have their own vehicles. While this trend may offer convenience, it also leads to greater environmental damage, as more cars on the road result in more pollution, traffic congestion, and the destruction of green spaces. We need to find a balance between convenience and environmental sustainability.

(Positive Effects):
(Personal freedom and convenience):
(Economic benefits):
(Access to remote areas):
(Negative Effects):
(Air pollution):
(Traffic jams):
(Accidents):
Positive and Negative Effects of Cars
Positive Effects:
1. Personal freedom and convenience:
Cars provide a great degree of freedom of movement. People can travel anywhere and at any time without depending on public transport schedules. This is especially convenient for people living in remote areas or those who need to quickly get to various places for personal or work-related matters.
For example, if you need to go to another city for the weekend or attend an important business meeting, a car gives you full flexibility. It makes daily life significantly easier and more comfortable.
2. Economic benefits:
The automotive industry is one of the largest sectors in the world, providing jobs for millions of people. Car manufacturing, sales, maintenance, insurance—all contribute to economic growth. Many businesses and sectors depend on cars, including tourism, goods delivery, logistics, etc.
For example, major car manufacturers like Toyota or Volkswagen create thousands of jobs and make a significant contribution to the GDP of the countries where they are located.
3. Access to remote areas:
Cars provide the ability to reach places that are not accessible by public transport. This is especially important for people living in rural areas or places with limited infrastructure. With a car, it is easy to reach remote villages, country houses, mountain areas, where there are no developed rail or bus routes.
This also simplifies work for tourists and people involved in agriculture or environmental activities, as a car is a convenient way to reach difficult-to-access locations.
Negative Effects:
1. Air pollution:
Cars are a major source of air pollution. Exhaust gases contain harmful substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons, which negatively impact the atmosphere. Air pollution contributes to climate change, causes smog, and degrades the quality of life in cities.
As a result, people suffer from respiratory diseases, allergies, and other illnesses related to pollution. Air pollution also affects biodiversity and leads to the death of plants and animals that cannot survive in such conditions.
2. Traffic jams:
Excessive numbers of cars on the roads lead to constant traffic jams, which not only waste precious time but also lead to excessive fuel consumption and increased emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. In traffic jams, drivers and passengers spend hours on the road, which in turn reduces productivity and causes stress.
Traffic jams also increase pollution, as cars remain stationary and continue emitting harmful gases, further degrading air quality, especially in large cities.
3. Accidents:
Car accidents are one of the leading causes of injury and death worldwide. Every year, thousands of people die or sustain serious injuries in traffic accidents. This is due to human factors (carelessness of drivers), road conditions, poor visibility, weather conditions, and even the condition of the cars themselves.
Accidents not only affect people’s health but also lead to financial losses, including medical expenses, car repairs, and compensations. Additionally, accidents can affect public perceptions of road safety and require improvements in transportation infrastructure.
Summary:
Cars undoubtedly play an important role in our lives. They provide convenience, freedom of movement, create economic benefits, and allow access to remote areas where public transport is unavailable. However, their use also comes with several negative consequences, such as air pollution, traffic jams, and accidents, which can lead to fatalities and environmental damage.
To mitigate the negative effects, it is important to move towards environmentally friendly cars (e.g., electric vehicles), develop public transport, and create infrastructure that promotes safe and eco-friendly mobility. It is important to find a balance between convenience and environmental protection to minimize the harm caused by car traffic and create a more sustainable future.
